The Linen Industry

The Linen Industry

There has long been a strong association between Ireland and the spinning of yawn and weaving cloth. Despite the difficulties in obtaining records for specific regions, such as the Sperrins, it is known that Ulster played the prominent role in the linen industry out of the four provinces. In Ulster a weaver household was common which included all the stages occurring under one roof; from growing the flax, preparing the yarn for spinning and hand-loom weaving. Available land that was not used for farming, flax was grown.
